Use of Artificial Intelligence Policy
Human authors, reviewers and editors remain responsible for their work and decisions. Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or reviewers. IPMM evaluates their use for transparency, integrity, confidentiality and verifiability.
Use by authors
At submission, disclose substantive AI assistance in writing, analysis, coding, translation, images or other parts of the research. Identify the tool and version where feasible and explain its role and where it affected the manuscript, data or figures. Describe AI methods in enough detail for assessment and reproducibility. Routine spelling or grammar assistance may be described briefly where relevant.
Accuracy and images
Authors check output against original data and reliable sources, correct errors or fabricated references, obtain permissions and protect privacy. Label AI-generated or materially altered images and describe how they were made. Alterations that misrepresent data are prohibited. AI does not replace scientific judgement or author accountability.
Reviewers and editors
Submitted manuscripts and reviews are confidential. Do not upload them, unpublished figures or related data to external AI systems when confidentiality cannot be assured, unless IPMM has expressly authorised the use with necessary permissions and safeguards. Disclose any permitted substantive assistance to the handling editor, independently verify output and make the final judgement yourself.
Use by the Editorial Office
The Editorial Office may use AI tools that provide appropriate confidentiality and data protection safeguards to support technical checks, such as formatting, verification of references and metadata, and compliance with the journal's templates. AI is never used to make editorial decisions or to replace peer review, and any output is verified by the editorial team.
Later concerns
IPMM may request clarification. Undisclosed or misleading use, fabricated content or breaches of confidentiality may lead to action under its misconduct and post-publication policies.
